Gari and Latirus are two Shell LNG carriers built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire in the 1970s. The ships are named after shells, the definitions of which are given in the brochures : « Gari, named originally by Schumacher in 1817. It is a marine bi-valve with world-wide distribution. It is found almost everywhere from South and West Iceland down to the Mediterranean. » & « Latirus, named by Montfort in 1810. Belongs to the family of Fasciolariidae. It inhabits coarse sand or shell gravel offshore down to about 30 fathoms. Easily recognized by fact that it possesses a long anterior canal to the shell. »
ARCHIVE OF UPCOMING, 2023, ALTAR, BERLIN
The present social, ideological, and political landscape influences our vision of the future. In uncertain and turbulent times, the future can appear uncle- ar and even dystopian. Art acts as an important gauge of a society‘s political and ideological climate, conveying ideas, ideals, and offering new perspecti-ves or warnings.
Archives and the future are often perceived as opposing forces. In our plan- ned exhibition, we reverse the role of archives: we explore the future inste-ad of the past. While preserving the prevailing narratives of the future, we fill their uncertainties and gaps with critical imagination. The archival spaces, typically reserved for preserving history for future generations, will now showcase diverse visions of the future that may become part of our history.
